Chapter 2. Why invest offshore? "South Africa is part of a much larger global environment and we, as South Africans, should support our developing economy. However, the country is vulnerable to changes in sentiment and the most effective way to find financial security and success is to make some investments in a stable economy with a strong currency such as the United Kingdom. The decision to invest offshore should not be wholly driven by fear of the rand's fall in value but should rather be influenced by solid financial planning that includes diversification of asset classes and markets. That said, astute investors should not ignore the mounting macro and micro indicators that are telling us that the South African economy has peaked and is now on a downswing. The international credit rating agency Fitch Ratings recently downgraded its outlook for South Africa's foreign and local currency debt to "stable" from "positive" and there is evidence that Moody’s who performs financial research and analysis on commercial and government entities, might soon follow suit. Socio-economic issues such as HIV/AIDS, unemployment rates, and income gaps paired with the onset of the credit crunch last year have resulted in a pessimistic forecast for the near economic future and a number of troubling statistics. According to analysts, the growing current account deficit, high interest rates, exponential inflation and the Eskom saga will put heavy constraints on economic growth. In response the Rand has plunged 41 percent against the dollar this year, the worst performer of 16 major currencies tracked by Bloomberg. Against the euro, South Africa’s biggest trading partner, we’ve lost 33% over the same period. Even if the South African economy were strong and getting stronger, however, international diversification should always be part of sound financial planning wherever you live. Offshore assets both offer diversification and reduce overall portfolio volatility at the same time." Did you know that you can get a FREE copy of this essential guide right now?
